Who We Are

Eight Decades of
Visual Courage

Founded in 1943, the Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago is the oldest established art organisation in the Caribbean. From a small gathering of painters and poets inspired by modernism and the wider world, we have grown into the region's premier institution for visual culture — nurturing, promoting, protecting, and advocating for visual artists and the visual arts in Trinidad and Tobago.

"My canvas is all things Trinidad & Tobago. Its festivals, quaint villages, peaceful rivers, majestic mountains and people full of a lifetime of stories will forever provide inspiration."

President, ASTT · Miniature Landscape Painter

Peter Sheppard is Trinidad's most celebrated miniature painter and the President of the Art Society. Born into a family of artists and carnival costumers, he works in acrylics with a precision examined under magnifying glass at London's Hilliard Society of Miniature Painters, where he won Best in Show in 2013.

His paintings — of the Northern Range, coastal roads, river valleys, and Trinidadian streetscapes — are acts of memory and love. "My canvas is all things Trinidad & Tobago," he says. "Its festivals, quaint villages, peaceful rivers, majestic mountains and people full of a lifetime of stories."

Founding Legacy

Carlisle Chang
Father of Trinidadian Art

Carlisle Fenwick Chun-Yee Chang HBM (1921–2001) is not a footnote in the ASTT's history — he is its proof of concept. He joined the Trinidad Art Society in 1944, trained under Amy Leong Pang alongside Sybil Atteck and Boscoe Holder, and went on to become the first Trinidad and Tobago artist to make a living entirely from his art.

In the three weeks before Trinidad and Tobago's independence in 1962, Chang volunteered to serve on eight committees simultaneously. It was he who designed the national flag — deliberately simple, so that, as he said, "a child should be able to draw it with a ruler." He also designed the coat of arms, adding the palm tree at the top to represent Tobago at the request of Premier Eric Williams.

His 50-foot mural The Inherent Nobility of Man at Piarco International Airport was called "possibly the most important work of art in the Caribbean" — and his artistic style was described as "a thoroughly indigenous fusion of the traditions of Europe with Trinidad's folk art." Peter Minshall, his creative heir, said Chang was "among the first to understand that this place is an incredible laboratory of the New World."
