Norris Iton

 

Norris Iton was a student of the Children's Saturday Art Classes run by the Division of Culture in the Sixties. He attended the Tranquility Gov't Secondary School and joined the Public Service in 1970 upon graduation from school. In 1971, he attended the UWI Extra Mural Vacation School for the Arts and did courses in ceramics and painting and the later joined the Workshop Group of Artists on the invitation of Lloyd A. Harris, the group's co-ordinator. Working with the workshop group led to Iton's first participation in the Trinidad and Tobago Art Society's Annual November Exhibition and membership in the Society.

In 1979, Iton entered Howard University, College of Fine Arts in Washington DC. He was awarded a Trinidad and Tobago Gov't Scholarship and graduated Summa Cum Laude in May 1983 in Printmaking and Painting. During the four years at Howard, Iton exhibited work at a number of major exhibitions in the Washington/ Maryland area and attended workshops by the National Museum of American Art in Monoprint and Greenwood Galleries in Ceramics. IN 1981 Iton was sent on an academic exchange program to Munich, Germany. The Program involved extensive Travel, lectures and gallery visits in the State of Bavaria and in Salzburg, Austria. In October 1980, the Mayor of Washington DC awarded Norris a Certificate of Appreciation for significant and valuable service to the district of Colombia.
 

On his return in 1983, Iton was seconded to the Teaching Service and was appointed Art Teacher at the Barataria Senior Comprehensive School. He resumed his activity with the Trinidad Art Society serving as Treasurer in 1984 and took over from Carlisle Chang as President in 1989. In 1982, Iton became a member of the Council of the Trinidad Art Support Alliance and from 1994 to 1995 served as Chairman of the Board of Management Royal Victoria Institute. Iton's work has been shown on many local and international exhibitions such as the Havana Bienal, Carib Art - An UNESCO sponsored travelling exhibition and Trans Africa Art Exhibition.

Norris Iton is at present Vice President of the Trinidad Art Society and continues to serve as Art Teacher/Dean at the Barataria Secondary Comprehensive School.
