Karen Hale-Jackson, born in Trinidad in 1956, is a self taught artist. Her favourite quote is “I was born with a paint brush in my hand”. She is an artist who works mainly in acrylic and paints local sceneries, houses, people, flora etc. “I especially enjoy doing work by commission as I know that the piece I am working on means something special to someone” says Karen.
As a child she spent every spare moment drawing, painting, making paper dolls and designing their clothes. The only formal training she has had in art is secondary level at St. Joseph Convent POS and 1 year at Fanshaw College in Canada. Painting just comes naturally to her.
In 1990, after many years sabbatical, due to family commitments, Karen once again entered the art world doing batik paintings. In 1991 she moved to Barbados to work on a collection for one of Barbados’s top hotels, Treasure Beach Barbados. In 1992, she returned to Trinidad and worked with ceramics for a few years before joining the corporate world. In 2000, in her free time, she started painting in water colour and showed her work for the first time in the “Women In Art” Exhibition July of that year. There was no holding her back after that and she has shown at many group exhibitions since then.
In September 2006 Karen decided to leave the corporate world and start painting full time. This soon lead to the conception of her art gallery/café, Full Circle Art Centre, which officially opened in January 2007. Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond her control she had to shut the gallery/café down at the end of 2007. However, out of bad came good and Karen is now fulfilling her life long dream and that is to be a full time artist. Full Circle is now a virtual art gallery displaying her work.
Her first large exhibition was in 2002 when she had a joint show with her sisters, Susan Hale and Pat Yee Foon, at Horizon’s Art Gallery. Having a preference for showing with other artists she has had other joint exhibitions in November 2008 at In2Art where she shared the limelight with Omowale and Tessa Alexander. She also showed with Heather Sabga in August 2009 and in March 2010 with Michael Phillips, Rachael Superville, Peter Soo Ping Chow and Yamide at Horizon’s Art Gallery entitled “5 Artists, 5 Styles”. These were all very successful shows for Karen, who has another joint exhibition scheduled for September 2011 at Horizon’s Art Gallery.
Karen has also shown her work in Tobago and Barbados and many of her paintings have been bought and taken abroad.
One of her proudest achievements is having her painting “Bitter Sweet” displayed on the Oval Wall. This painting was submitted to The Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago 68th Annual November Exhibition entitled “Sustainability and the Elimination of Poverty” and was one of the few chosen to be displayed on the wall in time for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). It was also one of 4 paintings chosen to be used in an advert placed by The Art Society of Trinidad & Tobago in a commemorative booklet printed in the UK and given to Heads of State and other officials who attended CHOGM.
There is also an article about Karen and her art in the November 2010 issue of an international sailing magazine, “ALL AT SEA”. This article, written by Ruth Lund and titled “Trinidad Through An Artist’s Eye” is about Karen’s work and how it represents the beauty of Trinidad and Tobago.
