Jones Gilbert
Born in 1926, Gilbert was a trained teacher who studied locally and abroad. He was for many years the Art Teacher at the Diego Martin Government Secondary School.
He started painting seriously in 1950 and took advantage of several Art Courses conducted locally.
A recipient of a Trinidad and Tobago Government Scholarship, he gained the B.Sc. (Hons.) and the M.A. in Art Education in the U.S.A., where he won the Chancellor's Award at Madison University.
He participated in various exhibitions locally and in Britain, U.S.A., Sao Paulo and in the Caribbean area.
His first one man show in Trinidad and Tobago was in 1962.Mainly a painter, he worked in oil, acrylics and watercolour. His themes, which reflect local life, were executed in a naturalistic style.
He has held a few one-man exhibitions. His technique as an experienced artist is manifest in his strength of organised pictorial space and explorations of colour. His works are generally packed with ideas and recurrent symbols. His works are in a realistic style as a genre painter.
