Pat was born in Woodbrook, Trinidad & Tobago, the second daughter of Theodore and Elsa Farrell. Her father, better known as Frankie Farrell instilled in her a love of nature and a healthy appreciation of the Trinidad outdoors. Pat always knew that she wanted to draw and to create but was not always encouraged to do this and it became something that she did when she had the time or the inclination.
After going to Bishop Anstey High school and discovering her artistic talents, she went to University in Canada to do a Sociology & Psychology degree followed by a degree in Clothing and Textiles. It was there she was introduced to weaving and was totally enamored by it. She now has two floor looms and a variety of other looms. Although she is mainly self-taught, Pat has done many short courses in drawing, water colour, ceramics and fabric design.
After coming back to Trinidad in the 70’s, she taught Textile Science and Applied Art at John Donaldson Technical Institute for 29 years. Now that her two sons are grown and she is retired she finds more time to do her art. She has exhibited at Trinidad & Tobago Art Society exhibitions mainly. She has had a few private exhibitions. One of her pieces was chosen for the Oval wall project.
Pat combines her love of fabric and paper with weaving and found objects to produce mixed media collages. Collage fascinates her and some of her work includes her weavings. She has been a collector of ‘things’ for a great portion of her life. What is one person’s throwaway is her treasure. She also has a wide collection of fabrics especially those that look different and a collection of dried leaves used in her collages.
She gets her ideas from visions in her head, experiences that she has had, from books and from her environment especially nature. She takes photographs of images that she likes and has a large treasury of clippings of anything that catches her fancy. She has been encouraged and inspired by Pat Choo Foon, Kenwyn Critchlow, Carlyle Harris and Elsa Clarke.
