“This present body of work is a subtle visual commentary on Caribbean history. The work reflects on identity, history, independence, exploitation and the idea of contrast.
Contrast has been a theme that I have always gravitated to very
naturally from the very beginning of my art-making life.
Sometimes the contrast is between colour and other times it may be a contrast of content more so than process.
The idea for this group of paintings came about from a trip to one of
the smaller islands where I saw the fragile state of tourism as an
industry and how that relates to history, independence and the
continuation of what I would call “the law of the jungle” idea that
seems to dictate how things are run in the world today.
This is a “theme” but I am not making any direct judgment or providing solutions. I don’t believe that this is the role of art. These ideas are the catalyst for my expression and not a political statement.
My style of painting contains many print-making elements such as wood cuts, stenciling etc. I contrast between abstract or non-literal
representation juxtaposed with recognizable elements.”
