Born: 1936
Born in 1936 at Dartford, Kent England, David, at the age of eleven, won a scholarship to attend Gravesend Grammar School. Here he commenced his secondary education with the intention to later study medicine. However, just two months after entering the sixth form to commence his "A" level studies, he made a dramatic change from the Sciences to Art. He was able to take two subjects at "A" level (Art and Woodwork) in one year and so proceed to study Art at Gravesend School of Art & Crafts in 1953.
After studying for two years, David gained his Intermediate Certificate in Art & Crafts and then embarked on the National Diploma in Design course, having selected as his subject of study Fine Art special level (painting). He qualified in 1957.
For the next two years David taught part-time Painting & Drawing at the Art School where he studied. In the beginning of 1960 he was selected from a field of 76 participants for the post of Medical Artist to the Department of Medical Illustration at the Royal Postgraduate medical school of London.
During his four years tenure at the Postgraduate Medical School of London he was responsible for all aspects of medical illustration for surgical and medical lectures, exhibitions and medical publications such as Text books and journals etc.
Having married a Trinidadian in 1960 David decided in 1964 to immigrate to Trinidad with his wife and two children. For the next seven years (1964-1971) he taught Art at St. Benedict's College, La Romaine. Throughout this time he also lectured in painting and drawing for the extra mural department of the University of the West Indies both for their summer school in creative arts and for the Extra Mural studies programme. During this period David was involved with design for the theatre (both set-design and publicity) working with James Lee Wah and the Drama Guild and also for the Secondary School's Drama Festival Association. He was also a founder member of the San Fernando Arts Council having designed the logo for the council.
In 1971 David resigned from the teaching profession having gained the position of Creative Director with Beston/Benton & Bowles Advertising Agency. His first major design project with this agency was to launch the newly fonned National Petroleum Marketing Co. Ltd., many other projects were to follow in the ensuing years, Nationwide Insurance Co. Ltd., Kiss Cakes Co., Aristocraft Furniture, Sandy Point Beach Club, - to name but a few.
In 1983 David joined Hernandez/Foote Cone and Belding as Art Director and worked successfully with the agency, retiring from the post of Executive Art Director in 1997.
David's early retirement has enabled him to fulfill a lifetime dream of painting full time.
