John-Paul Atherley was born in Port of Spain in 1976.
He lived the first three years of his life in Woodbrook, before his parents moved to Chaguanas where he spent the greater part of his life.
John-Paul was exposed to art at an early age when his grandmother enrolled him in an art class at the age of seven. However, it was his father, Beville Atherley, a Civil Engineer and avid art collector, who had the greatest impact on young John-Paul. Apart from collecting art, he took John-Paul to numerous art exhibitions, where sometimes he even met the artists. It was this exposure to the works of such leading artists like Boscoe Holder, Neil Massy, Larry Mosca, Leo Glasgow, Lisa O’Connor, Noel Vaucrosson, Knolly Greenidge, Trevor Rostant and Karen Sylvester that sparked John-Paul’s love for art.
At St. Mary’s he received formal training in the techniques of Water Colour and Drawing from Mr Eric Feely. He participated in the school’s annual art exhibitions which comprised mainly of works from Form 5 and Form 6 students.
After leaving St. Mary’s, John-Paul entered his first of many group exhibitions in 1997. He exhibited and sold pieces at the “Annual Water Colour Exhibition” hosted by the 101 Art Gallery. He also exhibits in the “Annual November Art Exhibition”, hosted by the Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago. His mediums of choice are Watercolour and Acrylic, and his subjects range from Trinidad landscapes, seascapes, and buildings, to portraits. Recently, he has been attempting abstract paintings, experimenting with the use of shape and colour.
John-Paul’s progress as an artist has been slow, since he paints part-time. He is at present employed with the Ministry of Social Development as a Research Officer. Consequently, he is a seasonal painter, producing works for submission to Annual National Exhibitions. His dream is to one day host a one-man exhibition. Until then he tries to update his skills as an artist by participating in short courses offered by the Art Society and other institutions.
