Canvas Caribbean is an artists group formed by graduates of the Visual Arts Degree and Certificate programs of the University of the West Indies. The group was founded in 2004. Among the objectives of the group are the hosting of annual exhibitions, to be a support group for the artists, to encourage and inspire members to keep working at their art, to host seminars and workshops and to visit other artists at home and abroad.
Some of our recent activities included the hosting of a Seminar at the National Museum and Art Gallery as part of the 20th Anniversary Celebrations of the Centre for Creative and Festival Arts of the University of The West Indies. We also held an exhibition of our work at the University of the Southern Caribbean in support of its launch.
We were privileged to have been the first group of graduate artists from the UWI, to have our work featured in Carifesta IX in 2006, evidence of this will be found in the catalogue of artwork printed for Carifesta XI. A mini-exhibition of the work selected for Carifesta XI was held at the Main Library of The University of The West Indies later that year.
Earlier this year, we were guests at the home and studio of well known artist, Mr. Carlisle Harris.
Members of the group have traveled several times to South America. We have visited Venezuela, Columbia, Brazil and Suriname. In these visits we met artists and designers, visited artists studios, art galleries and museums. These trips are part of our continuing education and are sources of inspiration.
